Auburn Students Find Their Place at Auburn's Unity Wellness Center

Volunteer citizens of East Alabama passed a baseball cap around the living room with no idea of where their donations would get them. It was 1988. For the past few years, patients had started showing up at the East Alabama Medical Center to be diagnosed with HIV. At the time, AIDS had only been recognized by the health community since approximately 1981, and HIV was a confusing subject to those diagnosed with the virus who would eventually develop into AIDS.On that night in 1988, $150 was…See More

Start and Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle with Campus Recreation

Starting college students believe they will keep with their exercise routines and continue eating healthy. For many this goal lasts only a short while. Dining halls are all-you-can-eat, outings with friends can turn into late-night snacks and social activities can deter students from their workouts.Being social is the biggest part of college. In the end students will look back and reflect on their friends and what they did together more so than their classes and what types of assignments they…See More

Posted on May 10, 2010 at 2:30am 0 Comments

When finals come students have their own ways of trying to take some of the pressure off. Some resort to some tried and true methods such as various forms of exercise, vents to friends, cat naps and comfort foods.

"I just usually go for a jog when the stress gets to be too much, it clears my head," says Vallon Douthit, a senior business major, "but the best stress relaxer is just going to a friends and venting it out. I always feel…

At the Heart of Special Education

Posted on May 7, 2010 at 2:43pm 0 Comments

Students concentrating in special education at Auburn know the true meaning of hard work going unappreciated. In their senior year of the program students enter their practicum at a local school ranging from elementary grades to high school. Students assist in teaching for an allotted number of hours per week to gain hands-on experience to adapt what they learned in the classroom.

Not all of the kids they teach have a severe disability. Some have a minor learning or…

AU Music Program Distinguishes Itself From the Rest

Posted on May 7, 2010 at 12:30pm 0 Comments

"Students who decide to major in music at Auburn are signing up for a different kind of program," said Dr. Jane Kuehne, Assistant Professor of Music Education.

Music students are expected to graduate and be able to not only play, but teach as well. While the pressure is on in a major that has students taking six or seven classes, opposed to the regular Auburn student's four or five, the sense of community in the music major is overwhelming.
