When I decided to attend The Loveliest Village, it was based on the concrete Auburn values exemplified everyday by the university. Academics, History and the campus were key components in deciding to attend Auburn, but I’ve learned subtle perks and quirks are what make Auburn truly special. Here are 10 unexpected reasons I would choose Auburn again.
Combine the best fast food restaurant in the country with monopoly TigerCard money and addiction sets in. Just ask Auburn linebacker Cassanova McKinzy who in 2012 committed to Auburn over Clemson in part because of the student center Chick-Fil-A. “Kind of the environment and plus they had no Chick-Fil-A on campus,” McKinzy said of his decision to not attend Clemson on USA Today.com. “You had to go like, probably like 15 minutes off campus to go to like a real restaurant. Their café was kind of small.”
After three years at Auburn I can say the transit system is one of the most overlooked perks of the university. Tiger Transit is simple and easy to use, especially when the temperature on campus hits the 90’s. As for the security shuttle, it’ll be your saving grace numerous times on late nights. “You’ve never appreciated a white van at 2 a.m. as much as the security shuttle,” James Mayer, junior.
Auburn has some of the best golf options in The South. From prestigious courses like Robert Trent Jones, to college budget links like Indian Pines there is something for everyone. (Moore's Mill, Auburn, Ala.)
Camp War Eagle won’t tell you this, but Downtown Auburn will become a part of your Auburn experience, plain and simple. Cheap drinks, cheaper drinks before 9 p.m., live music and everyone you’ve ever met at Auburn in the same place every weekend.
Nothing has ever made me miss Auburn more than going to a large city and paying $15 for an average meal. Living here spoils you when it comes to gas, rent, and food. It’s up for debate who wants to stay here more, me or my wallet.
When I decided to attend Auburn the Health and Wellness Center was a vision. Now, the $72 million facility is my favorite student building on campus. From racquetball to rock climbing and a PGA Tour Simulator, the Wellness Center has it all.
Joining a fraternity was one of the best decisions I’ve made at Auburn. Some of my best friends have come from there and numerous involvement opportunities presented themselves through Greek Life. Also, social events.
When I first came to Auburn I was unaware of the importance and stigma of becoming involved on campus. Every professor, administrator and Greek organization highly pressures students to get involved. The people and experience I gained from joining groups and clubs is remarkable.
The 2013 football season made my college career. I was lucky enough to work for our athletic department and football team the past year and the experiences and memories gained from last season will last the rest of my life. I would have never expected a season like 2013 or the impact it would have on my life. Thank you Coach.
Thanksgiving break my freshman year I visited London and after arriving at the airport and hopping on the tube to my hotel I ran into a man wearing an Auburn hat. After giving a hearty “War Eagle” and engaging in some small talk I realized I had just had my first true “Auburn Moment.” Barely an hour in a country thousands of miles away from the Plains, I found someone who shared the same love for my school as I did. It was the first of many Auburn Family experiences.
