Leaving home and coming to college is a completely new and exciting experience. For most people, it is the first time you can live on their own without rules and curfews. A lot of responsibility comes with the college experience, and there are many decisions to be made.

One of the first decisions any incoming freshman has to make is where to live. Students have the option of living on-campus in the dorms, or off-campus in a house or apartment. Some people find the latter more appealing, but here are the top five reasons why freshmen should live in the dorms:

1: Meet New People
Living in the dorms is one of the best ways to meet new people upon first coming to college. If you choose to live in an apartment, your neighbors are likely to be upperclassmen and keep to themselves.  While dorm life means you will frequently encounter other students wandering the halls and hanging out in the dorm lounge or lobby. Resident assistants will also plan gatherings and events for students in the dorms, and it’s a great way to get to know other people. It is also great that you will be living with mostly other freshmen who are in the same boat as you and eager to make new friends.

2: Dining Halls
If you live in a dorm, this means that there will be a dining hall within walking distance from you. Each dining hall on campus offers a variety of balanced options that are delicious and satisfying. Students who live on campus have $1,000 on their tiger card to use in the dining halls each semester, so you never have to worry about going hungry.

3: Close to Class
Because all of Auburn's residence halls are on campus, you won’t have to worry about taking a bus or car to class. Your classes will be within walking distance, which will give you extra time to sleep in the mornings.

4: Many Options
When applying for on campus housing, you will be asked to list your dorm preferences in order. Before making this decision, you may want to visit campus for a tour. There are four great options to choose from: The Hill, The Quad, The Village and the South Donahue Residence Hall.

5: Provides the Full College Experience
Many people will tell you that living in a dorm will give you the full college experience that every freshman needs. There are so many benefits to living on-campus and being surrounded by other freshmen that you would miss out on a lot if you chose to live off-campus. You will have the rest of your life to live in an apartment or house, but this is your only opportunity to live in a college dorm. It’s a fun and exciting experience, so everyone should live on campus for at least one year.
