When Julie Day was a young child she loved to play dress up with her friends and dreamed of getting involved in the fashion industry after she graduated from college. Now, as a sophomore at Auburn University, her dream could possibly become true since she is majoring in apparel merchandising here at Auburn.

Day is not like most college students since she has never changed her major. Day said, “ I always knew I wanted to have a major in fashion and when I found out Auburn University offered apparel merchandising I knew that was the right major for me. I have stuck with it for the past two years and plan on graduating with a degree in apparel merchandising.”

Day chose to major in apparel merchandising instead of product design and production management because she is more analytical and business minded when it comes to fashion. She would rather pick out the clothes for the store and sell them than actually design and make the clothes.

According to Day, “I am just now getting started with the classes in my major since I am only a sophomore. But I am looking forward to taking classes that have to do with my major like visual merchandising, consumer decision making, textile industrial complex, apparel production management, history of costume, textiles, and fashion analysis and forecasting.”

Some people may think that this major is just a fun major because you get to read about fashion and learn about the many different clothing styles. But according to Day there are definitely challenges that come with this major. Day said, “time management is definitely the hardest part of my major.  It is hard to balance time with all of the different projects and papers assigned and then have to actually study for the tests.”

Day is stepping ahead of the game and as a sophomore all ready has an amazing internship with Under Armour. Day is in charge of the visual merchandising area for all of the stores in the Auburn/Opelika area that sell Under Armour.  Day said, “I go into the different stores two to three times a week and see what is wrong with the presentation of the merchandise and then I fix it so that it is aesthetically pleasing. I have a specific set of rules that Under Armour makes me follow.  Once I finish the display I make a presentation of what I have done and I send it to my boss at the end of each week.”

Hopefully, the apparel merchandising department and the Under Armour internship will help prepare Day for the real world. According to Day, “When I graduate, I want to get a job for a large company and work as their merchandiser. I would travel, go to fashion shows, and choose the different clothes the company would sell. Then eventually I would love to own my own clothing store”.

Day is definitely on the right track to making her childhood dream come true by graduating from Auburn with a degree in apparel merchandising and all ready landing a wonderful internship with Under Armour.
