Katie Smith ('06 PR) writes the blog, A Southern Soap Opera and it is a fun read. If you know her, you love her.

In Katie's own words, the blog stars "Katie, a 28 year old self-confessed drama queen who just likes to tell about the random things that happen to her, because otherwise no one might believe them."

Katie says, "I'm the nerd who loves pop culture and fads, the storyteller who always has a 'funny story to share' and a girl who tends to be a little too open and honest sometimes."

A Southern Soap Opera also stars Katie's "fantastic friends and family members and those people who tend to cross our paths."

Katie likes to say, "ABC, I'm ready for my tv show when you are." We might throw in, "Mr. Demille, Katie's ready for her close-up." So, we gave it to her ... in the movie trailer below.

Katie's decision to attend Auburn wasn't a done deal.  "I actually was determined to go out of state when my parents forced me to take a campus tour of Auburn, praying I would be swayed by the beautiful campus and the in-state tuition. Luckily for them, I fell in love on my campus tour that day in March of 2001 and never looked back. I've been bleeding orange and blue ever since," said Katie.

Outgoing?  Involved?  Katie?  "I was a member of 2002-2003 Freshman Forum and participated in SGA all four years, including Secretary of Campus Project during my senior year. I was also a Camp War Eagle Counselor in 2003 and a Student Recruiter. I served as Administrative Vice President of that organization in 2005-2006. I worked in the Admissions office and felt like I spent my entire college career giving tours....and loved every minute of it," Katie said.  (Editor's Note:  We couldn't list all of Katie's activities because, well ... there wouldn't be room for the story.)

"I started my blog, www.southernsoapopera.com on June 1, 2008. I'd moved home from college and had jumped directly into a new career and a new relationship. My internship had lasted longer than I hoped and as I prayed for new employment and watched my first big-girl relationship flounder, I needed an outlet," said Katie.

She writes about everything from travel to friends, family to parties.  Examples of  friends posts are those about her buddy Ericka Bennett Jackson, AU '07 Comm.  You'll find all sorts of references to her activities ... and, on Facebook, Katie has a running theme of "Ericka sightings" where she finds Ericka being featured in various publications.  It's quite funny and sweet.

Sample posts:

"I wanted a place where I could write about what I wanted, when I wanted and how I wanted," said Katie.

"I love topics that are in the news, so I write about those a lot. My friends also will be the first to tell you that I have an obsessive nature, so if it's about Disney, the Duggars or Dolly, I'm probably writing about it. But I also have the most random things happen to me.....thus the name Southern Soap Opera. And I write about the weird goings on of my life: the midnight showings of Twilight and the car that chased me down the Interstate from Huntsville one day. It's whatever strikes my fancy," said Katie.

"Lately, I've missed my blog because my life has been so busy with my current career as a Project Manager at Complete Communication Services in Pelham, AL. But when I have a moment, I always skip away to my blog and write a post or two. It gives me a place to be creative, to vent, to talk about topics that are on my heart and lets me put things in written word that I might not have the guts to say verbally. It gives me the power to say what I want to say in my own little space on the web," Katie said.

Some day, if you're fortunate, you'll meet Katie.  It will be a good day.

Editor's Note: This series highlights students and alumni blogging.
Whether it be for personal pleasure or for work, the practice seems to be growing.
This has now become a five-week series.
