An Opportunity to Alternate Your Spring Break

Are you tired of the same old spring break plans? While you enjoy sunning yourself on one of the fine southern beaches, do you start to wonder what else you could be doing with your down time? What people out there you could be helping, what productive things you could be doing that don’t involve hours spent frying your skin?

If you find yourself thinking any of these thoughts, or maybe you’re just feeling adventurous, the College of Liberal Arts Community and Civic Engagement Initiative has the perfect opportunity for you.

For the first time, the CLA is offering LBAR 3910: Practicum in Liberal Arts. The focus of this course will be on the Clearfolk Community Institute, located in Eagan, Tenn. The course is offered for two credit hours, meeting four times before spring break, spending spring break in Tennessee, and meeting twice following the trip. Reading and reflection papers will be required of participants.

Dr. Mark Wilson will be the instructor for the course and will attend the trip with students over the break.

“This trip is an opportunity for students to experience community members as instructors and expand their idea of where and how learning takes place,” said Wilson.

The Clearfolk Community Institute was founded by Marie Cirillo, who moved to Clearfolk Valley, Tenn. with a group of former Roman Catholic nuns whose stories are the subject of the book Mountain Sisters: From Convent to Community in Appalachia. Cirillo lived in a community in Chicago where a large number of Appalachia families were forced to migrate, due to land deprivation caused by coal mining. Cirillo moved to the valley in 1967 and has lived there since, working to rebuild the community and improve the living conditions for the families living in Clearfolk Valley.

Students of all majors are welcome to apply for the course, but all who apply should have one thing in common: a desire to extend their education outside the classroom and to enrich the lives of others, all while relating this experience to their field of study.

The cost of the trip is $150, which includes food, lodging and transportation for the spring break portion of the class (a great deal compared to the $150 you may spend on gas for another spring break destination!). Students will be involved in a wide range of activities, from working on community gardens and assisting with asset mapping, to interacting with children in the community.

Wilson is excited to have the opportunity to instruct this course the first time it is offered, and hopes to be able to offer the course in future years.
