AU Marriage and Family Center Reaching Out to the Community

When students hear about the Marriage and Family Therapy Center located on Auburn University’s campus, they might draw some inaccurate conclusions. For some students, marriage and family are distant thoughts. For others the idea is not so distant. Regardless, this program has something to offer everyone.

Here at Auburn, the Marriage and Family Therapy Center is a training facility for master’s level students in the Marriage and Family Program. Located in the center of Auburn University’s campus in the Glanton House, the MFT center serves the AU students and faculty as well as the surrounding community.

The MFT Center offers therapy for a wide range of concerns. The therapists are trained to work with individuals as well as couples and families. The MFT center addresses issues about depression, stress, domestic violence, parenting, marital conflict, divorce adjustment, dating and relationship issues, marriage preparation and life transitions.

Jake Jensen, a therapist at the MFT Center, wants the community to know that their services are broad. Realizing that a lot of people have an idea about who should and should not come in and talk therapist, Jensen stresses that anyone is welcome.

“Really we see everyday people with everyday problems,” says Jensen. “People come in to talk about stress in college or maybe their parents are going through a divorce. What we try to stress is that you don’t have to be a crazy person to come in and talk to a therapist.”

Most of the therapists at MFT Center are students in training trying to get a Marriage and Family Therapy license degree. Sessions with any of the 12 therapists in training are supervised by three supervisors that are clinical members of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

The MFT Center also conducts regular research, conducting surveys with patients to determine the success of the sessions. The surveys that individuals and couples fill out are used by the therapists to track what therapeutic methods are helpful and to ensure that the therapy based on the research conducted at the MFT center.

Sessions at the MFT Center are approximately 50 minutes long and depending on the needs of the patient can last anywhere between several weeks to several months.
