Auburn Alum Captain Josh Newman has Tearful Reunion with Family

Auburn alum and Air Force Captain Josh Newman surprised his family with a visit home after a tour of duty in Baghdad, Iraq. Josh has been serving with his National Guard unit in Baghdad since July 2017.

Josh, a civil engineering major, graduated in 2007 from Auburn University. Lauren Smith Newman, his wife, graduated from Auburn in 2009 with a degree in journalism.

This lovely Auburn couple met while working at the Auburn University Bookstore in Haley Center. It was a fateful day.

"My very last day working there was his first day (both hired to be cashiers)," said Lauren, "so since I was leaving, they had me give him the tour of the sales floor as well as the behind the scenes lower level where all the merchandise is kept when it’s not out on the sales floor."

Lauren recalls, "Our first date was pretty simple. We went out to dinner on a Friday night to Santa Fe on College Street. Later the couple "went to hang out with a group of Lauren's friend. Then, in true AU fashion, ended the night at the original Momma G’s sharing some nachos."

The couple has two adorable children. Claire is 6 and Gray is 2. You will see them in the video.

This is an Auburn legacy family.  Today, Josh’s youngest sister, Anne Marie Newman, is studying early childhood education. Lauren's youngest sister, Karlee Smith, is studying supply chain management. The story was shared with us by Lauren's father, Kenneth Smith, who we believe is an Auburn alum, too.
