The search is on for the next great artisan and Auburn Art thinks he or she is right here in Auburn. Any one of any age who thinks they have a piece of art that shows the Auburn spirit should pay attention. AuburnArt in downtown Auburn is holding a contest right now looking for people just like you.
The artist search contest is all about finding new artists in the local area to highlight in the Auburn Art store. There are three categories in which art can be submitted: Southern by the Grace of Art which can be just about anything that embodies the South, All Artist All In which is everything focused on football and team spirit, and finally Toomer’s Traditions, a category to commemorate the beloved trees.
The competition allows artists of all ages to play around with any type of medium from color pencils to sculpting. The contest has been going on since the beginning of October and store manager Emily Ewing says they are excited by what they’ve seen so far. “We’ve had artists from elementary school students to retired adults. It’s cool to see how many artists there are in Auburn. People from all across the state have been calling in wanting to submit some art,” said Ewing.
Throughout the contest, photos have been posted to the Auburn Art’s Facebook page and part of the final stages involves crowd participation. From Oct.22 to Oct.29 people can go on to the page and vote for their favorite piece and the artists who have the most “likes” will continue to the final stage of the competition. Those finalists will be announced on Oct 29. A guest panel of judges will have the final say about who they think is the “next great artisan” and the overall winner will be announced on Nov.2 and will be featured in the Auburn Art Southern Art Show and will also win a cash prize.
“ We’ve had a lot of interest and we’re hoping to have a lot more. We’ve loved what we’ve seen and we’re encouraging anyone who thinks they might have something to just submit it. Enter anything. We want it all!” said Ewing.
The artist search contest is going on now through Oct. 22 at Auburn Art. Entries can be submitted using the Facebook page and all ages are welcome to participate. So get painting, sculpting, drawing, and creating. You never know, your art could be what they’re looking for.
