For the first time in school history, Auburn's baseball team played against Southeastern Missouri in its season opener this past Friday, Feb. 19. After losing Friday's game 13-8 in extra innings, the Tigers took the final two games in the series 9-8 on Saturday and 6-1 on Sunday. The Tigers are wasting no time getting their season in full swing, pun intended, and if the rest of the series prove to be as eventful as this opener, Auburn baseball fans should be in store for an exciting year.

The first 11 games will be at home in Plainsman Park baseball stadium with the next game against Boston College this Friday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m., also marking another first for Auburn, the start of its University Classic tournament. Missouri and Florida Atlantic will begin the tournament with a game at 2 p.m. Shortly after the University Classic, the team will be preparing for another “classic.” March 9 marks the second annual Capital City Classic game against Alabama in Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery. The Tigers won last year’s game 8-7.
The team will travel to play out-of-conference Arizona State on March 12. The Tigers will also play Georgia in their first SEC game of the season on March 19 and will host their first SEC series of the season against South Carolina on March 26.
As always, there will themed games again this year. Every Friday night SEC game will have fireworks afterwards and every Sunday (except the LSU series) is Family Day where a package of four tickets, hot dogs and drinks are only $30 if bought in advance. Discount hot dogs are also available on Hot Dog Night, April 20, for $0.50 each. Autograph Days will be February 21 and 28 and March 7.
The Tigers will also celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year and on April 9, Military Appreciation Night, when coaches and players wear hats with American flags on them to honor those in the military. The last few themed games of the season even give fans an opportunity to dress-up. April 23 is ‘70s Night and May 8 is Beach Day. Fans are encouraged to wear festive attire to each game.
“The team’s goal is a post-season NCAA appearance,” said Auburn head coach John Palowski.
Palowski’s ambitions don’t stop there. Like most coaches, he aspires to go all the way to the top. Palowski said that they wanted to win both the SEC and national championships.
These hopes could very well become actualities if the team continues to improve under Palowski’s coaching. Last year they just fell short of making the NCAA and SEC tournaments for the first time in eight years, going 31-35 (11-19 SEC).
