Local business Wake Up Coffee Company is collaborating with a team of Auburn students to revamp a Volkswagen van for the community. The vision is to make quality fair trade coffees more accessible to the Auburn community using a coffee van, dubbed Papercup Espresso.
As the popularity of food trucks has risen in recent years, shop owners Wade and Megan Preston recognized potential for both Wake Up and for university students.
Senior Kathryn Klebenow says she saw the project as an opportunity to put the skills she has learned in classes to work on a real world project.
Klebenow is one in a team of six students – five in industrial design and one in graphic design – that have worked through the summer to make the project come to life. Each member has brought their own expertise; understanding the inner workings of vehicles, capturing the welcoming and free environment of the coffee culture, and maximizing workspace efficiency have all been essential aspects of the project's design.
The Prestons say offering an avenue for students to gain experience was the perfect decision. They hope to offer similar opportunities in the future and grow a tradition of working with the university. The Papercup Espresso van will often be parked on Auburn’s campus, but may also be seen throughout the city. Klebenow says “With its new paint job, the van will definitely attract eyes” so be on the lookout, Auburn!
The Papercup Espresso van is still under construction at this time, but is expected to be making its appearance early in the fall semester. We’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, if you wish to learn more about the company, see pictures, or help fund the project visit their Kickstarter page.
