At the shy age of nine, Janiee Rush started her passion for singing by showcasing her newly found talent at Church. She was quickly asked to do a solo during a service, and participate in a Church play where she was able to sing.
“Church is what got me into singing, and it was something that I knew I wanted to keep doing. When I started it was just for fun, and I didn’t know then that it would be something that would be a big part of my life,” said Rush.
Not only was Church the reason she sings, but her mother as well.
“It might sound cliché, but my biggest inspiration would have to be my mom. She’s one of my biggest supporters, and I know that I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.” Rush continued by saying her mother has always encouraged her to keep singing and to seek any and every opportunity she can to evolve her vocals.
Auburn University held a singing competition called Auburn sings produced by Eagle Eye TV, in March. This was the competition’s third season. Try-outs were held in February to determine who would make it on the show, and after who would be chosen as the top ten contestants. Rush’s brother also made it through. It’s a six-week process, and each week they were challenged with different themes such as “songs from the year you were born,” or “Billboard number one hits.” The show aired on Eagle Eye TV’s Facebook page, and Facebook users were able to tune in and vote for whom they wanted to make it to the next round. Two contestants were voted off each week until the winner was chosen.
“This was such a fun experience for me, and I’m so glad I decided to do it. I was reminded of how awesome my support system is. I didn’t expect to win. To be honest, I was just happy to make it past the first round,” Rush said.
Rush referred back to Church and how it’s the best way she has used her voice.
“Ultimately, that’s how I want to reach out to people; to inspire them through music. I want God to receive all the glory.”
