Athletic Business magazine has awarded Auburn University’s Recreation and Wellness Center the 2014 “Facilities of Merit” award. The award is presented to 10 facilities across the country that show innovation in design and construction.
Athletic Business magazine began giving this award in 2006 and it has been given to 10 facilities per year since then. A panel of sports and recreation facility architects spent two days visiting and judging facilities to select the 2014 award winners.
"We are honored to receive the prestigious 2014 Athletic Business Facilities of Merit award,” said Jennifer Jarvis, Campus Recreation executive director. “We are extremely proud of our facility and how it will positively impact Auburn students for years to come. We are fortunate to have partnered with 360 Architecture, who kept the students’ needs first and foremost in their innovative design. This project would not have been possible without the total commitment of Auburn University's students and administration.”
Auburn University’s Recreation and Wellness Center is a 240,000-square-foot facility that features two gyms, a climbing wall, PGA golf simulator, outdoor swimming pool and more. It also has a walking and jogging track that stretches to one-third of a mile, believed to be the longest of its kind in the country. One of the judges, Colleen Mckenna, specifically commented on its criss-crossing, corkscrewing design and said that the track “really pulls the interior together.”
Stephen Springs, another member of the judges panel, spoke of the building’s size and scope saying, “Impressive in its sheer scale and scope, the project is also full of well-crafted details and attention to value and space.”
The architecture group responsible for the new Recreation and Wellness Center is 360 Architecture from Kansas City, Mo, and the Aquatic Design Engineer is Counsilman-Hunsaker from St. Louis, Mo. The total cost of the facility was $54 million.
Auburn’s Recreation and Wellness Center has garnered a lot of national attention since its grand opening in spring 2013, but none as prestigious as the 2014 Facility of Merit Award. Auburn students, faculty and staff are proud of the latest addition and the healthy lifestyle it encourages on campus.
