Become a pharmacist

Morgan Luger is a bio-medical sciences major with a concentration in pre-pharmacy. She was recently accepted to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at The Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University.

“I chose to pursue my doctor of pharmacy because I think it is an overlooked profession. It may seem like an easy job, but it is actually complicated,” said Luger. “We have to know a lot about how drugs react in the body.”

The Harrison School of Pharmacy takes a personal approach to teaching. They have programs to bond the students. All first-year students have a weeklong orientation to the program where they learn about the pharmacy profession, learn tips for classes and are assigned Pharmaceutical Care Teams.

The Pharmaceutical Care Team are formed of a group of students and two faculty members. These teams serve as a support group for students and allow students to be mentored by faculty members.

The pharmacy school also prepares students for their careers in pharmacy by providing a chance for them to apply what they have learned in an actual pharmacy.

“What appealed to me about the Harrison School of Pharmacy was that it focuses on patient-oriented approach to pharmacy,” said Luger. “As a senior in the program students are given the opportunity to get real-world experience by seeing patients at local pharmacies.”

Luger will graduate from the College of Science and Math in May 2010 and will begin pharmacy school in August.

“I was so excited to be accepted because The Harrison School of Pharmacy has a great reputation for preparing their students for a pharmaceutical career and I have an excuse to stay in Auburn for another four years,” said Luger.

The Harrison School of Pharmacy will host an Open House on Saturday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. Events include demonstrations, student advising, building tours and a free health fair.
