Picture this: You arrive at the library to study for the most important exam of your life. You open your backpack and realize you left your book at home. Oh no, what do you do? Do not fear the library has the answer to your problem.
The Student Government Association, the Interfraternity Council and Ralph Brown Draughon Library are all three co-sponsoring a textbook loaning program that allows students to check out textbooks from the library.
“The idea for the program started when some of the SGA senators decided Auburn needed a reserve program for textbooks,” Lindsay White, SGA assistant vice president for academic affairs, said. "They noticed students were going to the library forgetting a text book or needed one so they decided it would be a good idea to have textbooks on reserve.”
The program was constructed to allow students to check out a textbook of their choice for two hours. When the two hours is up they must return the book for at least 15 minutes and if it does not get check out during that time the student can re-check it out. Students can even go online and see if the book they need is available.
“You just go onto the library website it is really easy, and it shows you right there how many books we have for each class and then if the book is checked out or not,” White said.
The library does not house textbooks for all classes. The textbooks that are on reserve in the library are from the core classes and there is usually one book per class available. Classes that have high enrollment, such as the science curriculum, have multiple books available.
“We are monitoring the textbooks to see if we need more textbooks for different classes,” White said. “So right now we are in the process of gathering all that information to see what else we can get.”
This program has beenmore than a year in the making. The SGA, IFC and the Auburn library have been working hard to get this program up and running.
“It has been a long process, but we have finally have made it happen,” White said.
To check out a textbook of your choice venture to the first floor circulation desk or go online to www.lib.auburn.edu to see if your book is available.
