Auburn University Sailing Club does not only consider themselves a part of the Auburn Family, but they see themselves as their own family.

The club says they spend time together more often than just at the lake, and a lot of their closest friends are from the club. If they’re not sailing on Lake Martin or jumping off of Chimney Rock, they’re most likely at The Sailing House, in which the Auburn University Sailing Club Commodore, Sammy Hodges resides.

The club also partakes in other social events at the lake including: camping trips, cookouts, bonfires and parties.

Their fun is not limited to the lake, though. The Auburn University Sailing Club’s tailgate is a hotspot, as well. The Auburn University Sailing Club can often be spotted near Parker Hall tailgating before home games. The club is difficult to miss, as they usually bring along a boat, in which they play tailgate games on.

Dowtin McKnight, Auburn University Sailing Club secretary said, “The sailing club family is a sailboat within itself. Although there are many different people who look different, have different functions, and from the untrained eye look dysfunctional and confusing, the way these people work together make the sailing team work and glide through the waters of success.”
In addition to gaining a family, another great thing about the Auburn University Sailing Club is that its members can choose to treat it as a relaxing past time or as a competitive team. Sailing experience isn’t necessary to join the club, and members agree that you learn quickly.

The team competes in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association and attends regattas in many states including: Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

The Auburn University Sailing Club used to meet at Dixie Sailing Club on Lake Martin near Ridge Marina, but recently moved to Bay Pines Marina on Lake Martin.
Logan Little, Auburn University Sailing Club member said, “We switched over to this new club at Bay Pines due to the fact that the old one closed, and we had to find a new location.”

Little added, “It was kind of short notice and we ended up finding out that we have to pay money at this new location, so we’re a little worried about that. Our old one was free of charge to us because we are a club sport, but the people at Bay Pines are super nice and love us to death.”
Little say Bay Pines is really pretty, and that it’s actually a lot better sailing compared to the old location. He said overall the club really likes the new marina. They try to go sailing as often as possible, explore new islands and just hang out.
