Calorie counting, fad diets, low-carb meals, we have all done it.  There is a better way to eat nutritiously and live a healthy lifestyle.  Dedicated students in the College of Human Sciences, are able to give advice and aid others in developing a healthier lifestyle.

Jessica Lauren Roberts is the Campus Recreation Center’s registered dietician as well as a GTA under professor Robin Fellers here at Auburn University.  She meets and advises faculty, staff and students to help them discover their own healthier lifestyle.  Roberts finds joy in aiding others to reach their health potential.

“I grew up in a very medicine oriented home.  My mother is a pharmacist and my father is a physician,” Roberts said.  “I was always interested in the prevention side of medicine.  My parents taught me how to prevent diseases and other health risks with simple nutrition knowledge, so it has always been a part of my life.”

Roberts is pursuing her PHD so that she can not only be a registered dietician as she currently is doing, but she also plans to teach as well.  She enjoys assisting with lab instruction as well as teaching introductory classes under Fellers.  Roberts dreams of teaching and nurturing the minds of incoming dieticians.  Her best advice is that whatever your goal is, to just dive in.  She says getting involved and shadowing those who share your passion is the best way to learn.

Lauren Peterson thoroughly enjoys having Roberts as a teacher because of Roberts’ enthusiasm for the material.  “You can just tell she loves her job,” Peterson said.  Peterson is pursuing a career in Occupational Therapy, and is majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics.

“I am motivated to help others.  I see the constant growth of diseases such as obesity plaguing out nation every year.  I hope to make a difference in the lives of young adults and teens to help prevent this type of thing happening later on,” said Peterson.

Peterson's dream is to work in a hospital setting helping others and tending to their needs.  “I just love the feeling of knowing I can make a difference in someone’s life with what I have learned,” Peterson said.  She knows the degree she is pursing will not be easy to obtain, but her passion to help others motivates her.  “I hate having to study all weekend long and missing out on fun with friends, but I know it will benefit me in the long run,” Peterson said.
