Saturday, September 4, 2010. To most people this date does not have a significant meaning, but if you are part of the Auburn family you know what is coming. It is a day that has been long awaited ever since that last touchdown was scored and pom-pom was shook. It is when the orange and blue river starts to flow and the tigers come out to play. This day is Auburn football.
While the Tigers are loved and supported by many it is the students who are the true heartbeat and spirit of Auburn football. Whether it is an eager freshman excited about his first experience in Jordan-Hare or a bittersweet senior preparing for her last season with the Tigers, there is always an overwhelming support from the student body. This is why demand for seats in the student section is so high.
“I paid $100 for two student tickets for the fist game,” said Robert Parks, a recent Auburn graduate. “There is nothing like sitting in the student section. The atmosphere is so surreal.”
If you have sat in the student section to watch the Tigers battle it out till victory, you would understand why Parks chose to purchase student tickets, rather than general admission. The students share a bond that no one else can truly understand unless you have been in their shoes.
“The student section at Auburn is indescribable,” said Christin Hoffman, a sophomore.
Many students do not mind paying the steep prices for tickets because it is what they get in return. They know their day will end with memories that will last forever.
“I paid $150 my freshmen year for the Auburn-Florida game,” said John Haggard. “It was well worth every dollar.”
Jimmy Epps, a senior, recalls the 2009 West Virginia game and how the students were the only ones to fight through the uncontrollable weather.
“My best memory in Jordan-Hare was the West Virginia game last year when it started raining and the entire student section sat there,” Epps said.
This Saturday is the Tiger’s first game of the season. The marching band, the Tiger Walk and the eagle soaring through the crowd are just few things fans are looking forward to. There is already a buzz of chatter about this year’s team and the greatness that is expected from them. No matter how the Tigers perform Saturday, you can bet the students will be cheering them on till the end.
“The bond that is felt for the first time you step foot in Jordan-Hare is something that will be with you the rest of your life,” said Hoffman. “That’s why you can’t put a price on Auburn football.”
