It’s a question on the minds of Auburn students nearly everyday, “Where will my Auburn degree take me?” The answer is simple for Auburn alumna Jenna Nash. Her public relations degree landed her a highly sought after job at Forbes Magazine.
Nine months ago Nash, a Spring 2011 graduate, packed her bags, grabbed the one-way ticket her parents bought her and set off to the Big Apple. “I had two small suitcases and no plan. It was the scariest yet most exciting thing I have ever done,” Nash said.
What she did have on her side however was her Auburn degree. Nash credits most of her success in the working world to the “Style and Design” class she took with Robert French. She said the class provided her with writing samples for her portfolio, hands on experience with all of the top computer design programs and a beautiful website to send to employers once she started her job search. “The fact that I knew how to do all of these unique things definitely made me stand out among other applicants; Human Resource recruiters have told me so,” Nash said.
Her website and Auburn education certainly caught the attention of Forbes Magazine, where Nash was recently hired as a “Circulation Assistant.” There she serves as assistant to the Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing, but is also involved in many other projects. Nash’s department encompasses marketing, business development, newsletters, planning and operations, to name a few. “I’m learning so much being able to engage in all of these different fields,” Nash said.
Although Nash says she was fortunate to have found a great job in a great city she also notes that it wasn’t a smooth ride. “When applying for new jobs, I would usually apply to anywhere between 50 -60 jobs before I would even get one response,” Nash said.
Nash encourages students majoring in public relations to not be discouraged by today’s tough job market. “Luckily for us Auburn graduates, we were blessed to have attended one of the best, most recognized schools in the country. When I say I have a public relations degree from Auburn University, I say it with so much pride, knowing that I made it through one of the most rigorous and highly respected Liberal Arts colleges around,” Nash said.
The next time you consider where your Auburn degree can take you, think big, think Forbes Magazine and think with no limits just like Nash did, because an Auburn degree can take you anywhere!
