Honors College Recruit the Best to Give the Best

The staff at the Auburn University Honors College is going above and beyond to recruit and develop the future leaders that will attend the university. Associate Director Kathie Mattox works one-on-one with students, parents and administration towards the ultimate goal of watching these students graduate, she said.

“My purpose is to help students grow, develop, mature, succeed, graduate and leave the university to start their bright futures as the leaders of tomorrow,” Mattox said.

Students are qualified to enter the Honors College prior their freshman year at Auburn by having at least a 29 ACT or 1290 SAT and 3.5 high school GPA. Current Auburn students who have a 3.5 GPA or higher and an interview can be accepted in various cases.

Mattox hopes to advocate the benefits that the Honors College provides for the students who show exceptional academic potential at Auburn.

“The students selected enjoy the benefits of priority registration, library privileges, smaller classes, on-campus selected housing, honors advising and assistance in applying for other outside prestigious scholarships,” Mattox said.

According to the Honors College Web site, they “aim to enhance the undergraduate educational experience at Auburn University and to educate and prepare the young men and women who have the potential to influence state, national and world outcomes.”

Mattox duties include, but are not limited to, advising the Honors College students, meeting with prospective students and their families, coordinating the Honors Orientation sessions, schedule students’ classes and evaluating applications for scholarship status.

She also teaches a freshman orientation class for the students called Honors Lyceum, UNIV 2277, that emphasizes study habits, registration, study abroad, service learning, advising and campus activities.

“Up to 24 students are chosen each year to represent the college as Honors Ambassadors and recruit at special university events,” Mattox said.

The Honors College participates in each War Eagle Day, Talons Day and Presidential Scholars Day that is held on campus.

Mattox says that these students take advantage of the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research and write a thesis or give a podium presentation. Honors Congress is also another organization specifically available for the students in this college.

With all these opportunities and more offered to the students of the Honors College, the administration is more than ecstatic to bring in new students every year and have them experience the delights of being in the Honors College.

“It’s a blessing for me to be a part of their lives and to watch them grow and learn,” Mattox said.

Located in Cater Hall, the Honors College has an open door policy and also takes appointments. For more information, email the office at honors@auburn.edu or visit www.auburn.edu/honors/college.
