For the first time in its history, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is hosting a yearlong outdoor sculpture exhibition. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, “Out of the Box” will make its official premiere Friday, Oct. 4.
“We’ve been wanting to make use of the large properties at the museum for a long time,” said Dennis Harper, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. “It seems to cry out for sculpture.”
Artists Robert Stackhouse and Carol Mickett will judge the 10 sculptures featured in the exhibition. First, second and third place winners will receive monetary prizes, and all entrants will receive an honorarium to offset the cost of delivering and installing their works.
To launch the sculpture exhibition, the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art is hosting the Out of the Box Opening Reception and Tasting Tour. The event begins at 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the museum.
“We are going to kick off our 10th anniversary with a fantastic party here on Friday night,” said Dr. Marilyn Laufer, Museum Director. “It will feature not only the opening of our Out of the Box first ever juried outdoor sculpture show, but it will also feature tasting tents along the way to get people to walk around and look at the sculptures.”
Tasting tents are set to have Asian, Southern, Mediterranean and dessert themes, accompanied by corresponding beers and wines.
Tickets are required for attendance. General admission tickets are $45, and tickets for Auburn University students are $25. The museum is expecting 300 attendees at the reception.
The museum’s anniversary celebration will continue throughout the weekend with a birthday party on Saturday, Oct. 5. Various activities will be available for families and children free of charge. The time for the party will be set following the announcement of the Auburn football game against Ole Miss
