The Sigma Lambda chapter of Kappa Delta sorority at Auburn University is hosting its 21st Annual Shamrock 5K Run on Saturday, March 1, 2013, at 8 a.m. The run will be held at Willow Hall, located in the Village dorms, on Wire Road at Auburn University. All ages are welcome, and the run will go on, rain or shine.
Kappa Delta puts on the Shamrock 5K Run each year to raise money and awareness for the prevention of child abuse. Last year, $16,500 was raised for Prevent Child Abuse America, one of the sorority’s philanthropies, says Hillary Henderson, a senior Kappa Delta.
This year’s proceeds will go to Prevent Child Abuse America, a national organization, and LeeSCAN Special Deliveries, a local organization.
Kappa Delta’s Shamrock Chairman, Kathryn Lewis, and the Shamrock committee organize the event. The running logistics are organized by Aorta.
Registration and packet pickup for runners will be Friday, Feb. 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, March 1, from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., both at Willow Hall in the Village. The cost to run is $15, and door prizes will be given away the day of the race. Also, awards will be given to the overall top male and female finishers.
Kate Hughes, a member of the Shamrock committee, says she has both learned and benefitted from the organizations that Kappa Delta donates the run’s proceeds to.
“Shamrock is all about an opportunity for Kappa Delta’s to give back to the community, which we have gained so much from,” Hughes says.
Henderson agrees with Hughes saying each year the sorority is “more and more motivated to raise a larger amount of money for the children.”
The Shamrock Project, the root of the Shamrock 5K Run, is a national Kappa Delta program that both collegian and alumnae support to raise money for national and local child abuse prevention organizations. All 154 active collegiate Kappa Delta chapters across the nation participate in their own form of the Shamrock Run.
“I love that all across the country, Kappa Delta chapters put on their own Shamrock event, and that our chapter at Auburn has been promoting the prevention of child abuse for 21 years through our run,” Hughes said. “It really is a fun time for all our chapter members to come together for a great cause.”
