Max Fitness, The Student Recreation Center, Pure Barre, or personal training, the city of Auburn has it all.

With the numerous options of places to exercise as a student, how does one pick the best place to go? I attended three different facilities in Auburn, and evaluated their program. I also interviewed regular users at each location to get a feel for the intensity of their classes and satisfaction of the customer.

Max Fitness is located right off the corner of South Donahue Drive and East University Drive. Just recently, the recreation center changed from the chain, Gold’s Gym to being called Max Fitness. I personally have a membership of $29.95 per month that includes access to all special classes, the tanning bed, and workout facilities within the building.

If you’re interested in a cheaper price, you could sign the $19.95 per month contract, which would solely give you access to the interior workout facilities and no other benefits.

Personal Trainers are offered at Max Fitness, but you have to really be committed to coming each week and every time that you are scheduled.

The atmosphere of Max Fitness is very upbeat because of the large building, background music, and amount of people that are constantly in there working out since the gym is open 24 hours a day.

“I love working out at Max Fitness because the music playing helps me get into my groove while exercising,” said Lauren Gross, a member of the gym.

Pure Barre is a sophisticated, exclusive exercise facility located off Moore’s Mill road. Looking at the numbers on their website, your eyebrows will quickly raise at their high prices.

Your first month unlimited use of Pure Barre costs $100 versus the $19.95 at Max Fitness gym. The huge difference is the personal attention during the classes you attend at Pure Barre.

“They know my name when I walk in because I am on a personal level with all of the physical trainers. I love it because they know me well enough to see my progress,” said Caroline Pyburn, a regular at Pure Barre.

Since the program is only for women, small, pulsing movements are used to tone the their bodies rather than trying to bulk up more muscle. The instructors use stretch bands, dumbbells, and rubber balls throughout each class to lead the exercises.

I loved the personal atmosphere, but I prefer going to work out on my own schedule rather than being limited to specific times.

The Student Recreation Center currently on campus was my least favorite experience of all the work out facilities. There is a huge need for change and growth in the program, but that is what all Auburn Students have to look forward to with the new Health and Wellness Center on campus.

“Since the current work out rooms are not very good in the Rec center, I am a member at Max Fitness, but I plan on quitting my membership at Max Fitness right when the Health and Wellness Center opens in the Spring of 2013,” says Mary Coleman a freshmen on campus.

The Student Recreational Center consists of a couple of rooms with treadmills, weights, and ellipticals. Currently, you can get a personal trainer for $175 per semester. That is an awesome deal compared to only getting 10 Pure Barre classes out of that amount.

“My personal trainer has really helped me develop individual workout habits that I know I wouldn’t get anywhere else. The Rec center is also so convenient because it’s on campus,” said Allison Thomas, an active user of the Student Rec center.

For more information on current offers of the Rec center and the future plans for the Health and Wellness Center, you can view their website at:

My experience showed me that people’s different preferences when exercising make all the difference, but I’m thankful for the variety of exercise facilities that Auburn has to promote a healthy living style!

Overall, there are so many options of ways to pay your way to work off the freshmen fifteen, get those spring break ready abs, and simply stay in shape, so it is your responsibility to decide how much money it’s worth!
