Alpha Delta Pi sorority held its annual philanthropic event called “Pie-A-Pi” on October 16, to benefit Ronald McDonald House charities. Every fall ADPi’s gather on the green space ready to be pied in the face to raise money for Columbus, Ga.’s Ronald McDonald House.
The Ronald McDonald House program provides a “home away from home” for families with children who have been hospitalized. The program allows for families to stay close to their children and enables them to provide the love and support their child needs.
ADPi has partnered with Ronald McDonald House charities to provide them with financial support through the creation of several annual events including Pie-A-Pie and a basketball tournament that is held every spring.
The fun, laid-back vibe of ADPi’s philanthropy events draws students in every year to donate to a good cause.
“My friends tell me they enjoy the event because it is a fun and unique way to support a great organization,” ADPi sophomore Halle Haynes said.
“I think students really enjoy Pie-A-Pi. It’s inexpensive for students to participate in, it helps an outstanding organization and on top of that you get to pie someone in the face,” ADPi junior Claire Fisher said.
Members of ADPi sold tickets for $1 each leading up to and during the event. One ticket was worth one pie. Members also donated cans of whip cream to make the pies.
“One thing that sets Pie-A-Pie apart is the convenience and the costs that are involved. It’s easy to swing by between classes and you can essentially use some spare change to participate,” Fisher said.
Reflecting on how Pie-A-Pi went this year, ADPi philanthropy chair Lindsey Hearon said, “It was a great event and was so much fun as always. It was so inspiring getting to see how college students can make such a big impact on peoples’ lives without even realizing it.”
By only charging $1 to participate in the event ADPi has seen a great turnout for Pie-A-Pi every year.
“It reminds us that whether we know it or not we have been blessed and it is our responsibility to be good stewards of our blessings through our finances, time or encouragement. Everyone can give and serve others in some way, big or small!” Hearon said.
ADPi also helps out with a golf tournament that raises money to benefit Ronald McDonald House charities and collects pop-tops that are turned in to provide more funding. Groups of ADPi members also travel to the Columbus, Ga. Ronald McDonald House to help prepare dinner for families once a month.
