In a city that never sleeps, a journalism major has his work cut out for him. Keeping up with breaking news, the latest scandals, athletic events, and political happenings with deadlines to meet can prove to be rather taxing on a full-time student at Auburn University.

OK, so maybe Auburn, Ala. doesn’t exactly qualify as “a city that never sleeps,” but for journalism majors, vigorous coursework can often disguise the loveliest village on the plains as a non-stop, on-the-go metropolis.

“We have multiple stories due each week,” said Simpson Fletcher. “It just depends on the week and what all is going on.”

Fletcher, completing her fourth year in journalism courses at Auburn, enjoys the time and effort she spends working on a story.
“It’s a great major if you like to talk to people and find out about different things.”

The Department of Communication and Journalism does an excellent job of preparing students for any type of journalism field they wish to enter. With courses covering reporting, feature writing, and photojournalism, the program covers all aspects of journalism.

Real world experience is also provided with a practicum course, in which students become a part of The Auburn Plainsman staff. Students write a minimum of one story per week for the newspaper, and if published are given valuable pieces to add to their portfolio.

Admission into the journalism undergraduate program is based off an application process and may be granted to incoming freshmen or current students at the university. It is rare that students are granted admission as a freshman, so deferred students should apply once they complete 45 hours or more of core coursework at Auburn. While Auburn may not qualify as a booming metropolis, the skills acquired through the journalism program are not to be discounted.

“I’ve learned lots of life lessons and real world skills I’ll need to be successful,” said Fletcher. “I highly recommend the program to any students with a knack for writing.”
