Get your running shoes on, SGA's annual Fall 5K is right around the corner. The annual run will kickoff at the Auburn University Green Space on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.
This year, the director of the Fall 5K is Auburn University sophomore, Katie Kuhn. Kuhn, from Sugar Land, Texas, is pursuing a degree in biomedical sciences. This is her second year of involvement in Auburn's SGA.
"I decided to be a part of SGA to have an opportunity to help the community. Also, I think it is important to show the Auburn community that the university really does care about what is going on right in our backyard," said Kuhn. She said her favorite thing about being a member of SGA is getting to know new people. "I have enjoyed working with both the food bank and Habitat for Humanity of Lee County, as well as other organizations," said Kuhn.
As this year's director, Kuhn has an array of responsibilites. "I am responsible for organizing the event, getting sponsorships, having t-shirts made, and the overall oversight of the event as a whole. Basically just making sure that everything runs smoothly," said Kuhn. She said that the most fun she has had as the director has been seeing other people get excited about the event.
The proceeds from the 2011 Fall 5K will benefit the Habitat for Humanity of Lee County. "The AU Dance Marathan has sponsored Habitat for Humanity in the past, but is now sponsoring Children's Miracle Network. We were looking to try something new this year and thought that our 5K would be a great way to raise money for our local Habitat for Humanity," said Kuhn.
According to Kuhn, there were about 500 people involved in last year's race. She said their goal number of runners for this year is 800. Last year, the SGA was able to donate around $6,000 to P.A.W.S., Plainsmen in Action Wounded Soliders, which was a campaign of the 2010 Miss Auburn, Kristi MeGahee.
"Registering for the 5K is easy," said Kuhn. There is a $15 registration fee which includes a free t-shirt while supplies last. In addition, anyone who pre-registers will receive 10 Spirit Points. "Anyone is more than welcome to register either online at www.auburn.edu/SGA/programs/fall5K or the day of the race. Before the race, granola, gatorade and water will be available and after the race, pizza will be served" said Kuhn. "Come out for a fun day with the Auburn Family to help the Auburn community!"
