Seniors Not To Miss Their Last Iron Bowl

Heading into the 2009 Iron Bowl with a 7-4 record is an impressive feat for Auburn University's young football team that faced a challenging schedule. Early and pre-season chatter among Auburn fans yielded mixed feelings on how the season, specifically the Iron Bowl, would turn out.

Amid the chatter was an uproar from students and fans, unhappy about the game being slotted for the 1:30 p.m. spot on CBS, on Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving.

Over the past few weeks, Facebook has seen an alarmingly high amount of “IRON BOWL TICKET FOR SALE, MESSAGE IF INTERESTED” statuses from Auburn and Alabama students alike.

However, many students at both schools plan to attend the game, even though it cuts the Thanksgiving holiday short.

“The Iron Bowl is the Iron Bowl,” said senior Anna Twardy. “I’m the kind of fan that would still go on Thanksgiving Day, so it really doesn’t matter to me.”

Twardy plans to attend the game with her roommates, who are also coming back to Auburn to witness their last Iron Bowl as undergraduate students.

Evan Carraway, a senior from Thomasville, Ga., also plans on making the drive back to Auburn to attend her last Iron Bowl before graduation.

“Even if the game doesn’t go our way, the drive back to Auburn is worth watching the game with my friends,” said Carraway.

Graduating in December, Carraway plans on attending graduate school at Florida State University.

“The Iron Bowl will be my last football experience with my friends before we all go our separate directions,” said Carraway.

Win or lose, the Iron Bowl is a one of a kind experience for Auburn students, especially when played in Jordan-Hare Stadium. From arriving at the stadium hours before kick-off, sitting through the unbearable cold (the predicted high for Nov. 27 is 57 degrees), joining together in a heartfelt “War Eagle” while the eagle flies around the stadium, cheering “bodda getta” hundreds of times, a hot chocolate run during half-time, and (cross your fingers) a feel-good victory when everyone stays in the stadium as long as possible; every Auburn student needs to experience an Iron Bowl win at home.

For the seniors planning on graduating this December, May or August, we had the opportunity to experience our Jordan-Hare Iron Bowl victory in 2007. But you can bet that we’ll be joining the masses at Jordan-Hare, cheering on our Tigers, in hopes for another priceless victory. See you at the Iron Bowl!
