Natalie McCormick is a senior majoring in Civil Engineering and is also getting a minor in dance. Although the two may seem not to go hand-in-hand, she, along with many others, have decided to minor in something they are passionate about, dance.
Just recently, the Auburn University Department of Theatre added a dance minor. The curriculum of the minor consists of Beginning, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Advanced Dance Techniques and a production class. Also offered is a Special Projects class which is either tap or ballet.
Adrienne Wilson, Assistant Professor of Theatre, teaches the dance classes and has been teaching at Auburn since 2006. She said there are currently 30 dance minors and many more students are involved in the classes.
Every year, there is a dance concert. In the past, the concert has been called, "dAUnce." This year, Wilson changed it to, "Sit Down and Dance!" The theme of the concert revolves around chairs.
There are six pieces in the concert and about 30 dancers are performing pieces representing choreography by four different choreographers. The six pieces are contemporary/modern dance and rhythm/musical theatre tap.
The performances will be Jan. 29-30 at 7:30 p.m., and Jan. 31 at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free for everyone.
McCormick has choreographed a piece and will be performing as a student choreographer at the concert. "You can find dance everywhere," McCormick said, many of these pieces "allow you to see the pedestrian side of dance."
