Even though many areas of Auburn University’s campus are walking distance from each other, students find safety in a nighttime ride service that takes them from one on-campus location to another.

The Night Security Shuttle Van is a service provided by the Auburn Department of Safety and Security in which students can call a number and find transportation on campus between the hours of 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. The van runs seven days a week when classes are in session, according to the Tiger Transit website.
“It’s definitely nice when it’s raining and you don’t want to walk really far,” said Elizabeth Segarra, a sophomore in Public Relations. “It’s free, and it runs during the night so it makes campus safer.”
The shuttle is a popular service on campus, and sometimes it can be crowded, according to Segarra. Sometimes students may need to wait for some time on busy nights before they can get on a shuttle.
“It’s still always efficient, and it’s gotten me where I need to go,” said Segarra. “My experiences on the shuttle have been good.”
For some students, the security shuttle has provided more than a ride in the dark. Rachel Desmond, a sophomore in Psychology, even met a friend riding the security shuttle.
“I was going home from the overflow parking lot, and the driver was taking forever to take us back,” said Desmond. “I ended up sitting next to this guy and talking to him for 40 minutes, and now he’s one of my best friends.”
The drivers are also usually friendly, according to Segarra.
“The longest ride I have ever taken on the bus has been from resident overflow parking lot on the west side of campus to the far east side of the campus in the dorms located in the Upper Quad,” Segarra said.
The phone number that students can call in order to get a ride on the shuttle is (334) 844-7400. Students can call from anywhere on campus between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.
