Studio 5 is a student-created group for Auburn students that are passionate about art.

“Studio 5 is a club that is open to all majors,” said Jesse Burleson, the president of Studio 5. “We get together; we volunteer at the museum and generally discuss our passion for art. Whether it is through traveling to an exhibition or working on papers together, we are just a community of students that share a common interest in art.”

Each semester, the members of Studio 5 travel to museums like the Birmingham Museum of Art and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, volunteer at the local Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art in Auburn, Ala., and are provided with opportunities to attend important lectures and exhibits.

Earlier this semester, a few of the members even traveled to New Orleans, La., for Prospect.2, a biennial event featuring international contemporary art throughout the city.

“Prospect.2 is an event that aims to bring the tourism and cultural aspects back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina,” Burleson said. “The art was located at several different venues across the city, so you got to travel and see different places while you were there.”

The group visited several different museums, such as the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and a district of the city near Julia and Magazine Streets that houses many of the art dealers, galleries and auction houses of New Orleans.

“In addition to the trip to New Orleans, we already have a lot of activities planned for the rest of this semester,” said Marie Baker, the current treasurer of Studio 5. “There are two trips to the High Museum and a few socials too. Everything we are doing this semester is going to be a lot of fun.”

One of the trips to the High Museum is to participate in College Night. This event will focus on the museum’s current exhibit, Picasso to Warhol: 14 Modern Masters, and will provide visitors the opportunity to interact with the exhibit and other college students that are interested in art. The event creates a social environment for the students where they can do crafts inspired by the artwork on display, listen to live music and dance.

The members of Studio 5 are encouraged to volunteer at the Jule Collins Smith Museum’s Saturday Art Club. The Saturday Art Club is a free event the museum holds on various Saturdays for children in grades K-12. The children that participate in the Saturday Art Club do crafts that relate to the museum’s current exhibits, providing them a way to connect with and think about the art.

Studio 5 was created in 2008 by student Kelly Hansen to satisfy a need for a support group for students studying and interested in art history. The group meets every other Monday in Biggin Hall, Room 005, at 5 p.m.
