Imagine yourself after classes spending the evening in a real Irish Pub, the weekend at the Great Wall of China, swimming the Caribbean between classes or hiking one to one the seven world wonders like Machu Picchu. These situations may seem impossible or only something you have only dream about and pin on Pinterest. Situations like this are possible through studying abroad.

I’m student and I understand how we might not have the money, time or correct major to study abroad or even know where to begin. There are so many reasons why studying abroad will impact you as a person and for your career. Studying abroad makes you a better employee, allows you to see the world, take in a new culture, learn a new language, find a new interest, make lifelong friends and gain personal and career development.

I’ve studied abroad in Chile for two semesters and Spain for a summer. Through these experiences, I’ve to gain so much knowledge and experience. I want to share with you why to should studying abroad and how to do it.

Where to Start

Sometimes it’s hard to do something when you don’t know where to begin.

  • The best place to start is on the Auburn Abroad website. Here you can find numerous study abroad programs with Auburn and programs outside of Auburn. You can browse as many programs online and find one that fits you by the destination, major and the time you want to go.

  • Study Abroad 101 session, held every Thursday at 3 p.m. and Friday at 11 a.m. in 242 Foy Hall. These sessions are held by study abroad alumni so you can ask them as many questions about their experiences to help you out.

  • Stop by the Auburn Abroad office full of friendly people will to help you study abroad and answer any question you might need.

Why you should go

“Because of my experiences abroad, I have an important understanding of other cultures and a better understanding of my own,” said Justin Nail junior at Auburn. “My view on life is radically different thanks to my experiences abroad. I learned more about myself in the month than would learn in a lifetime.”

By immersing in each other's cultures you gain adaptability, gain an advantage in a job and advanced academic, gain a new perspective on your studies, or first-hand experience in your career. With our world constantly becoming more connected you need to find a way to make yourself stand out and study abroad is a way to do that.

“Getting an education isn’t just about getting good grades or test scores it also about having real experiences with the world beyond your borders,” Michelle Obama.

According to an article in The New York Times magazine, "Every Student Should Study Abroad," only about 10 percent of students studying abroad, people who want to work in our interconnected global world should study abroad. Learning how to interact with people from other countries and cultures equips future leaders amazing career opportunities.

How it Will Impact Your Life

“From my experience in Fiji, I learned the more you immerse yourself in a world of complete unfamiliarity, the more fulfilling and life changing the experience will be,” said Hailee Walls junior at Auburn. “I made so many deep friendships in Fiji and now they're literally part of my family. Two of my favorite Fijians are flying here in three weeks, and none of us can wait."

You will make friends from all over the world and bonds with people you never thought possible. Step outside your comfort zone and realize more about yourself and what you would in life. It’s a time of experience you can’t have another way unless you emerge yourself in the culture. It is the most reward thing you can do for you self and gain academic credit.

Stephanie Lambert, senior at Auburn,"Studying abroad helped me to learn and grow as a person through experiencing diversity in culture and language. I will forever be grateful for the impact this has had on my life."  (Images from Auburn Study Abroad webpage.)
