Ten Things Every PR Major Learns in Style and Design

Auburn University public relations majors are required to take a web design course titled Style and Design for public relations messages before graduating. This course focuses heavily html/css coding, basic mastery of the Adobe Creative Cloud products and on writing for outside publications. The curriculum is rigorous, but the rewards are great. The following is a fun list of 10 things every PR student learns while in Style and Design. To learn more about the Auburn University public relations major, click here. 10. Rule Number One: No crying in the lab
Inevitably there is a moment that every web design student reaches his or her breaking point. You may have that breaking point alone, or with other students, but avoid having that moment in the lab. Everything will be okay. Take a walk around Tichenor and start fresh later.

9. Graphic design skills are a major plus
Any internship that offers an opportunity to grow as a designer is a major bonus. As PR professionals, we are required to be skilled in many areas. If you are strong in design, you will go far.

8. Codecademy: Do it. And then do it again.
And then do it again. Seriously, this is one seven-hour course you will be glad you took. Learning html coding requires serious practice. The more you practice, the more you remember and the easier it is to format your pages how you like.

7. The secret to success: Time Management.
This one is a beast. Heed the warnings. Stay on top of things and avoid procrastinating. Seeing how long your body can go without sleep really isn’t the best way to go about it. You’re mind is much sharper when you’ve had a full night of sleep.

6. Spelling
In an age where we are dependant on autocorrect and spell check, this one is a killer. Warning: Dreamweaver does not have spell check. OH, and spelling errors cost you a letter grade.

5. Classmates become friends
With countless hours spent in class together, in lab together and in the library together, you will grow closer to your classmates than you could ever imagine. These people share your struggles. They understand that the final product is more than some measly “drag and drop” site. They understand the coding and the designing. Stick together!

4. Typography is everything
You will learn that typography is about 90% of design. Become very familiar with Google Fonts and Dafont.

3. Missing Class is Not an Option
Go to class. End of story. Don’t fall behind at the start, but if you do, don’t panic. Just go to class.

2. Avoid Internet Explorer
Choose Firefox. That’s the best route. Don’t ask me why, just trust me.

1. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
This course will stretch you. It will push you to your limits. You may wonder how you will ever make it. You will probably question whether you should even finish. Finish anyway. You will feel stretched because you are growing. You are developing the skills necessary to be an outstanding public relations professional, and best of all, you end the semester with an incredible marketing tool.
