Financial advice that facilitates a student’s transition from college to the “real” world is a precious commodity these days. The College of Human Sciences’
Women’s Philanthropy Board, however, is working to make sure there is no shortage of such mentoring on Auburn’s campus.
On Tuesday, February 23, the WPB will host its
2010 Winter Board Meeting at The Hotel at Auburn University. All Auburn students are encouraged to attend this business and professions expo, which will include a panel discussion and luncheon featuring speakers from all across the country working in a variety of industries.
“The mission of the Women’s Philanthropy Board is to enable, empower, and educate women to develop their leadership potential, to achieve independence as financial decision makers and donors, to serve as mentors for future generations of philanthropists and to broaden the base of financial support for the College of Human Sciences,” Sidney James Nakhjavan, director of the WPB, said.
The luncheon, beginning at noon, will feature speaker Linda Descano, President and Chief Operating Officer of Women and Co. in New York City, a company that provides women with educational resources for navigating life transitions and planning their financial future. Descano will speak on “Mastering the Art of Financial Transitions in the New Normal.”
The luncheon will cost 35 dollars for WPB members and the general public. Those who wish to sponsor a student’s attendance will be asked to donate 20 dollars, and sponsored students are responsible for 15 dollars toward their ticket fee. Reservations are required and are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
No money to spare? No problem. Prior to the luncheon, the WPB will host a panel discussion featuring speakers Henry Saxon, Regional Service Director for the Boys and Girls Club of America, Karen Hughes, Founder of Image Assets, LLC., and Carrie Carpenter, Director of Development for the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts, at no charge to faculty or students.
“It’s a great opportunity for students to network…You can go in as an empty slate and take away whatever it is that you want to,” WPB Mentee and Chief Student Liaison Whitney Griswold said.
And don’t let this organization’s name fool you. Male students and faculty are welcome at this and any other Women’s Philanthropy Board event. And Nakhjavan is confident that this year’s Winter Board Meeting panel discussion and luncheon will be beneficial to anyone who sets foot in the door.
“We have members from all over the country who give their time, their talent and their treasure. They entrust us to carry out our mission,” Nakhjavan said.
