The Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics is not all about studying and testing. COSAM offers more to the students than what meets the eye. Lindsay Harris, a junior in COSAM, proves that being in the college has a fun side as well.
Harris is one of the few students given the title of COSAM Leader. A COSAM Leader is an official host or hostesses of the college. The group is made up of 16 people, eight boys and eight girls.
“What we do is we represent COSAM at various events on campus like War Eagle Days, a homecoming tailgate, receptions and a lot more,” said Harris. “Also, anything that COSAM puts on we are there. We are the face of all COSAM students.”
Anyone in the College of Sciences and Mathematics can become a COSAM Leader. The interview process begins in the spring and you must be an upcoming junior or senior with at least a 3.0 GPA. There are two rounds of interviews with the President and Vice President of COSAM Leaders as well as interviews with advisors of the college.
There are tryouts for COSAM Leaders every year. However, if you make the organization your junior year you are automatically a COSAM Leaders your senior year as well. A student can also try out just for their senior year.
“My favorite part of being a COSAM Leader is getting a chance to know the faculty and staff on a personal level,” said Harris. “Not only is being a COSAM Leader fun it is something that looks great on a resume. Also, it allows you to network with people and get great references.”
Being a COSAM Leader offers an opportunity to meet new people and have fun while representing the college at the same time. COSAM Leaders are involved in about 80-90 assignments every year. The organization is led by Dr. Larry Wit a faculty advisor of the college.
Harris is majoring in Biomedical Sciences and plans to go to dental school at the Medical College of Georgia. Harris became a COSAM leader as a way to give back to her college, she is confident that her experience as a COSAM Leader will have an impact when completing her application to dental school.
