With today as Halloween, it is a great time for us to look back at our childhoods. Holidays typically make us nostalgic and this is especially true for Halloween. We remember our favorite costumes, the best decorated house, the spookiest moments and the candy. Another Halloween activity we like to reminisce on is the movies we watched. So for this Halloween, here are five great movies from our childhoods that everyone should watch:
First shown in 1998, “Halloweentown” is the story of a girl, Marnie, who is turning 13 and finds out, to her surprise, that she is a witch. She rebels against her mother and follows her grandma into the mystical city that is Halloweentown. It is a typical coming of age story with the usual fluffiness that only Disney can provide. “Halloweentown” had many sequels including “Halloweentown II”, “Halloweentown High” and “Return to Halloweentown”. These movies are adorable and light hearted. They are also part of our childhood trust issues because they switched the actress who played the Marnie three movies in.
2. Hocus Pocus
If you have ever watched television during the month of October, I am sure you have seen the movie Hocus Pocus. “Hocus Pocus” is about three sister witches who are resurrected on Halloween and it is up to a two teenagers, a little girl, and a speaking, immortal cat to save the day. You don’t want to miss this chance to see Bette Milder and Sarah Jessica Parker (before she was famous) as the witches.
3. The Goonies
“Goonies Never Say Die!” The movie that invented the “truffle shuffle” follows a group of kids on an adventure to save their town. They find a treasure map in their attic which leads them into all kinds of trouble. Although it is filled with sappy moments, this movie by Steven Spielberg is a classic. You definitely want to dig through your VHS collection to watch these kids on their quest for One Eyed Willie’s treasure.
This movie from 1995 stars the famous, friendly ghost. A twist on the typical haunted house story, Casper is living with his three crazy uncles, who are also ghosts, when a father and daughter move in. The daughter, Christina Ricci, becomes friends and she tries to help Casper learn about his past as a human. This movie is a great change from current ghost movies. So if you would rather not be terrified watching “Paranormal Activity 3”, then you should watch this instead.
5. The Addams Family
Everyone’s favorite odd family members are the main characters of this amusing film. This movie also stars Christina Ricci, which shows that as a child actress she apparently found her niche as the weird daughter. The movie shows this quirky family’s antics while their neighbors come up with a scheme to steal their riches. If you want to feel better about your own family and have a good laugh, you should watch this movie.
All five of these movies are great ways to get into the Halloween spirit today. So if you want to feel like your eight-year-old self, pop one of these movies into your VCR and enjoy!
