Presents, Santa and reindeer are some of the most beloved Christmas traditions. For many, it’s hard to imagine a Christmas without them, but for thousands of children across the world, this is a luxury they may never experience.

Rushing to the tree to open presents and empty stockings is undoubtedly a fun tradition that lights up every child’s face. However, it is important to remember that Christmas is not only a time to receive gifts, but is also a time of giving.
“It is easy to get caught up in the Christmas rush,” said Lindsey Rodgers, Auburn University student. “Malls are always packed and lines to see Santa seem to start earlier and earlier each year, but it is sad to think how quickly people forget the true meaning of Christmas.”
The Auburn Department of Public Safety has launched their annual Toys for Tots drive. This is an opportunity for the community to come together and help make a difference in childrens’ lives.
Toys for Tots is a program that is designed to assist less fortunate families by donating toys to children on Christmas day.
“By donating to this wonderful cause it gives children the opportunity to experience the excitement of Christmas morning,” said Rodgers. “It may be something you take for granted, but for these children and their families, it is an act of kindness that will never be forgotten.”
Toys for Tots will be collecting new, unwrapped toys through December. Anyone wishing to donate can stop by any time at the Auburn Fire station or Auburn Police Division located at 161 N. Ross St.
Two drop-off points have also been established at Uncle Bob’s Self Storage. The stores are located at 1231 Gatewood Drive and 2020 S. College St.
The toys will be placed into age appropriate categories. The gifts are scheduled to be delivered the week before Christmas.
“It is great to see members of the Auburn community come together and help families in need,” said Greg Thompson, a member of the Auburn Fire and Rescue Department. “It is such a great program, and the donations are more appreciated than they could ever imagine.”
Auburn prides itself on being a family. This is a time when the Auburn community can show others what this really means and help their fellow neighbors during hard times.
“Donating to Toys for Tots is extremely easy and does not take much time,” said Rodgers. “Every child deserves a Christmas morning filled with laughter and presents.”
