Travel With Care Campaign Brings Safety to Auburn

The City of Auburn, Auburn Police, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Auburn University have partnered to bring transportation safety to Auburn, Ala. Travel With Care is an annual public awareness campaign promoting safe behaviors, mutual respect and understanding among audiences of all modes of transportation.

Throughout the past few years The City of Auburn has partnered with the University to bring safety to our campus. Thanks to this partnership, the University has added increased lighting and signage, brick-raised crosswalks and lighted pedestrian billboards to high-traffic parts of campus. Results of the campaign has made a significant difference, but the Travel With Care team has its sights set higher.

This year, Travel With Care brought its campaign to Auburn’s campus to educate students and community members on how to enhance awareness and safety among all road users. The week-long campaign kicked off Monday, Sept. 15, on Samford Lawn and continued through Sept. 19. Speakers at the event kick-off included Auburn University President Jay Gogue, Auburn Police Chief Paul Register, Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones and more. Throughout the week, volunteers could be found at a table filled with neon green t-shirts and other prizes at Toomer’s Corner, on Haley Concourse and other popular spots on campus.

The Travel With Care team gave out information about traffic issues and offered those who stopped by a chance to win prizes by taking a

brief quiz. The quiz offered visitors education about various traffic and safety issues regarding all modes of transportation: pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and transit buses.

“I walked by the Travel With Care station on the concourse and took their safety quiz. It gave a lot of valuable information. I think it’s really important, especially for students, to be aware of these issues and keep our campus as safe as possible,” said Kiki Isaac, senior Auburn student.

The campaign proved successful. Throughout the week, hundreds of students and community members stopped by the travel with care tables to receive vital information. The team will continue to raise awareness and safety in Auburn through Travel With Care.
