Tri Delta Triple Play Hits a Homerun for St. Jude

Come on out to the ball game and help fight childhood cancer all in one fell swoop with Delta Delta Delta sorority’s Tri Delta Triple Play philanthropic event.

Delta Delta Delta, better known as Tri Delta, sorority partnered with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1999 and adopted them as their national philanthropy.

St. Jude, which is located in Memphis, Tenn., is the only pediatric cancer research center and hospital where patients and their families are never required to pay for treatment not covered by their insurance. The beautiful thing about St. Jude is that no child will ever be denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay.

In 2002, Tri Delta pledged to raise $1 million in four years to endow St. Jude’s teen room. In 2005, an entire year ahead of schedule, Tri Delta accomplished this goal.

Since then Tri Delta continued on to pledge “10 in 10,” which represented their wish to raise $10 million in 10 years to endow the new patient care floor in Chili’s Care Center. At the end of 2009, the sorority had already raised $7.8 million and had to amend their goal of “10 in 10” to “10 by 10.” With the new objective of “10 by 10” they pledged to raise $10 million by the end of the year 2010.

The sorority is currently working on a more vigorous challenge that the Tri Delta Executive Board created in August 2010 to raise “15 in 5,” which represents raising $15 million in five years to name the Specialty Clinic within St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Tri Delta Triple Play is only one of several events through which Auburn’s Phi Theta chapter of Tri Delta is working to achieve this goal.

Bridget Eyler, a sophomore in hotel and restaurant management and the Vice President of Public Relations in Auburn’s Tri Delta chapter, explains, “Tri Delta Triple Play is a wiffle ball tournament the sorority is hosting to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and childhood cancer research.”

Who wouldn’t want to attend a wiffle ball tournament in “The Loveliest Village on the Plains” and also support these women in fighting childhood cancer?

Taylor Edmonson, a sophomore in international business and the Philanthropy Chair of Auburn’s Tri Delta chapter, excitedly explains, “100% of the proceeds from Tri Delta Triple Play will go to benefit St. Jude. Since the sorority partnered with St. Jude in 1999 we’ve raised $12 million for them.”

In past years at Auburn University, Tri Delta hosted a similar event called Frats at Bat. Edmonson clarifies, “This event is different from Frats at Bat in that it does not limit who can participate. It is now open to anyone, not just fraternities.”

The sorority is even encouraging participants to invite their friends and family to play in the tournament this year.

If you are not interested in playing in the tournament, visitors are more than welcome to come by and watch the festivities free of charge. Eyler included, “There will also be food, prizes and a raffle for signed Auburn sporting gear at the tournament. Raffle tickets are $3 a piece, a great price for some incredible prizes.”

Eyler tells us, “I love that my sorority sisters and I are all working together, with the rest of our Auburn family, to help kids fight in their battle with cancer.”

If you are interested in playing and want to form a team you can send an e-mail to trideltaTP@aol.com to get registered. It is $5 per person to participate and $10 per person to participate and receive a shirt.

An extra bonus for the Greek community is that you will receive two spirit points for participating and two extra points simply for purchasing a shirt.

The event will be held from 11a.m. until 4p.m. in the Village Courtyards, directly in front of the Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Omicron Pi chapter rooms, on Saturday, April 2, 2011.

For additional information you can e-mail trideltaTP@aol.com or search the Tri-Delta Triple Play event on Facebook.

Let’s work together as a family, the Auburn family, to help this excellent cause and kick cancer out of the ballpark!
