Auburn University selects Joseph Aistrup to lead College of Liberal Arts

Auburn's Largest College Welcomes New Dean

AUBURN UNIVERSITY - Following a national search, Joseph Aistrup has been named the dean of Auburn University’s College of Liberal Arts. Aistrup, currently the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University, will begin his appointment Sept. 1.

“Dr. Aistrup brings a wealth of experience as both an administrator and an educator,” said Timothy Boosinger, Auburn University provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We look forward to his leadership of the College of Liberal Arts and its diverse programs and course offerings.”

Aistrup began his tenure at Kansas State in 2002 as associate professor and head of the Department of Political Science. He also served as interim dean of the KSU College of Arts and Sciences before becoming associate dean in October 2012.

“The degree programs of Auburn’s College of Liberal Arts offer students an exceptional education to prepare them for life,” Aistrup said. “The college plays a central role in the general education of every student at Auburn, and I look forward to becoming its dean.”

Prior to joining Kansas State, Aistrup was director of the Docking Institute of Public Affairs and professor of political science and justice studies at Fort Hays State University.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State in 1982, a master’s from Virginia Tech in 1984 and Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1989.

“I know that I will ‘find my place’ among the outstanding faculty members, students and professional staff of the college and university,” said Aistrup. “My wife Shelley and I are excited to become members of the Auburn community.”

Aistrup’s primary teaching and scholarly interests are state and local politics, Southern politics, water policy and research methodology. He has significant experience in strategic planning for economic development.

Aistrup has published two books. In 2010 he and colleague H. Edward Flentje published "Kansas Politics and Government: The Clash of Political Cultures" by the University of Nebraska Press. In 1996, Aistrup published "The Southern Strategy Revisited: Top-Down Republican Party Development in the South" by the University Press of Kentucky.

His work has been published in a number of political science journals, including Social Science Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Soviet Studies and American Review of Politics, as well as in public policy and analysis journals, including Court Review, Economic Development Review, Economic Development Quarterly, Kansas Government Journal and Kansas Business Review.

Originally from Winfield, Kan., Aistrup earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University, a master's from Virginia Tech and a doctorate from Indiana University.  (Source)

Dr. Aistrup will assume the office of Dean when Dr. Anne-Katrine (Anna) Gramberg (photo, left) steps down this summer after eight years of tremendous service that has seen remarkable growth for The College of Liberal Arts.

Dr. Gramberg has served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Auburn University, Auburn, AL since 2005.

She held administrative responsibility for 3 Associate Deans, 13 Department Heads and Chairs, an 8 member Information Technology Team, a large administrative staff, over 5,000 students, approximately 400 faculty members, 9 buildings, and a budget of over $50 million (including endowments).

Dr. Gramberg has been a Professor of German at Auburn University since 1993.
